Our History
We’re currently gathering historic photos of our church to share here soon.
Arlington Street United Methodist Church began in the late 19th century out of a simple need: a place of worship within walking distance for the residents of Crown Hill. In 1892, a Bible study group formed in local homes, soon growing into regular services held above a grocery store at the corner of Arlington and Gillis Streets.
By 1898, the foundation of the current church was laid, and the building quickly became a center of faith and community. Much of the construction was done by devoted members working after long days, reflecting the spirit of shared effort that continues to define the church today. Early groups like the Ladies’ Aid Society played a vital role, raising funds, supporting the church, and serving the wider community.
Over the decades, the church grew and adapted. A parsonage was completed in 1912, an organ installed in 1927, and the church survived the devastating Crown Hill fire of 1930. Through the years, improvements—from heating systems to renovations and expansions—reflected both changing needs and a continued commitment to worship and fellowship.
In 1992, the congregation celebrated its 100th anniversary, and in 2004 completed a major addition that included accessibility improvements, classrooms, and new ministry space.
Throughout its history, Arlington Street UMC has remained deeply connected to the community it serves. From local outreach efforts like the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Crop Walk, to global mission work and charitable giving, the church has consistently lived out its faith through service.
Today, Arlington Street United Methodist Church continues to be a place of worship, growth, and outreach, shaped by its past and guided by a spirit of hospitality and inclusion. While the challenges of today differ from those of its early years, the mission remains the same: to open our doors wide, welcome all, and carry our faith forward—together.
